Cruising the Ross Ice Shelf and Walking with an Emperor

Inexpressible Island and Emperor Penguin, S.Blanc

Yesterday morning began with wonderful sightings of Orca/Killer Whales and, with light snow falling, we arrived at the Ross Ice Shelf. This magnificent natural feature stretched from Cape Crozier, well known for 'the worst journey in the world', to end about 800 kilometres away. We were captivated by its immense, sheer sides capped by a flat expanse, as seen from the Spirit of Enderby.

Later that morning we departed for Franklin Island, arriving at 1900 hours. The evening was beautiful with the sun lighting up the surface of the ice cap. However, conditions were unsuitable for landing so we proceeded to Inexpressible Island. This morning in excellent weather we landed and walked, ice crunching underfoot, to the site of the 1912 Scott Northern party snow cave where we observed a very fine adult Emperor penguin.
