Scott and Shackleton's Huts in One Day

Scotts Hut, Cape Evans, I.Wilson

With perfect weather we began the day at Scott's Hut in Cape Evans. This was a very special experience with so much detail to take in. Many of us then strolled about the surroundings with artefacts now over 100 years old and also walked up Windvane Hill to view the Memorial Cross erected by the Ross Sea party in 1917.

After a hearty lunch on board Spirit of Enderby we changed location to Backdoor Bay near Cape Royds. An interesting walk over a moonscape of sparkling volcanic scoria, led us to Shackleton's Hut and many moulting Adelie penguins. Back on board we changed location and during the evening, saw the refreezing of the sea and the setting sun on Mt. Discovery and the peaks of the Transantarctic Mountains.
