Exploring Discovery Hut and Hut Point

Discovery Hut, Hut Point, S.Blanc

Today started like many of our expedition days in Antarctica - early and with fabulous panoramic views of the landscape. As we reached the end of McMurdo Sound the extensive US McMurdo Station, beside Winter Quarters Bay, was prominent below Observation Hill and Scott's memorial Cross.

At 0900-hours we landed beside the Discovery Hut at Hut Point. The sombre darkened atmosphere reflected the privations of Shackleton's Ross Sea party, the last occupants in 1915-16. Leaving Ross Island we proceeded along the edge of the McMurdo Ice Shelf with excellent wildlife sightings of Emperor Penguins, Minke Whales and, beyond, a glorious sunset.
