Sailing in the Wake of Scott

Spirit of Enderby, Terra Nova, H.Ahern

This morning the sun shone brightly as we continued along the coast of Terra Nova Bay. Before us stretched text book glaciated landscapes of light brown rock, snow fields and cliffs of ice.

Soon we were experiencing similar conditions Scott's Northern party had in 1912, as they sought a refuge for winter. The katabatic wind was blowing and the sea was a mass of foaming waves and spray.

Following the path of Scott's men we were however, very comfortable on the Spirit of Enderby as we passed Inexpressible Island and saw where the intrepid party wintered over. A few hours later the great Drygalski Ice Tongue, named by Scott, was before us occupying the entire horizon.
