Peace, History and Japan’s Famous Floating Torii Gate
It was a beautiful sunny day for our visit to the Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum and a day to respect the history of what Hiroshima means to the world today. At the Atomic Bomb Memorial, we laid paper cranes we made on board in memory of those that lost their lives here and witnessed a local school ceremony laying their strings of cranes and singing to recognise their forebears.
In the afternoon we enjoyed the magnificent scenery and cultural history of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima. The iconic floating torii gate being one of Japan’s most photographed places was a sight, and site, not to be missed. Welcomed by the curious local deer, we wandered the streets, shrines and temples for the afternoon. One spirited group climbed 2 hours to the top of Mt Misen where they enjoyed fantastic views over Hiroshima Harbour.
Back on board our trusty expedition vessel we enjoyed fresh local oysters, Kanazawa sake and a barbecue on the back deck as the sun set and Miyajima faded in our wake.
