Underground Highs in Shimononseki

Today we explored Shimonoseki on Japan’s main island Honshu. Akiyoshido Cave, one of Japan's largest cave systems, proved a highlight for many guests with a one kilometre walk down through spectacular limestone formations and following an underground river before exiting in a gorgeous, forested canyon. Most stopped at the ice cream shop near the bus with 130 different flavours – including wasabi, cherry blossom, and local summer oranges.

Other highlights were the Shirone Botanical Gardens and the Chofu Gardens. We were also given the option of visiting Kokura Castle and the local museums before heading to the incredible Akama Jingu Shrine. As we left, we were farewelled by a group of locals gathered on the wharf to say goodbye.

Just before dinner everyone was on deck to navigate one of the busiest shipping straits in the world. The narrow Kanmon Strait between Honshu and Kyushu can reach speeds of 9 knots at peak tides. After sailing under the iconic Kanmon Bridge, linking the islands of Honshu and Kyushu, we set off for tomorrow’s adventure.
