Eleven Penguin Species in 29 Days

Snares Crested Penguins, The Snares

Cruising into the lee of The Snares at 0400 hours, expeditioners on our In the Wake of Scott & Shackleton voyage were up at 0600 hours and out in the Zodiacs forty five minutes later taking advantage of the calm seas, perfect lighting and abundant wildlife.

Exploring the rocky coastline in our Zodiacs, we were treated to some exceptional avian activity with sightings of Snares Fernbird, tiny black Snares Islands Tomtit, the comical antics of Snares Crested Penguins with their shock of yellow feathers above their eyes and our 11th penguin to date - a lone Fiordland Crested Penguin.

Penguin aficionados adding the latest additions to an impressive penguin line up including Little Blue, Yellow-eyed, Rockhopper, Gentoo, Royal, King, Adelie, Chinstrap and Emperor during our voyage down to Antarctica.

As Spirit of Enderby (Professor Khromov) heads towards Bluff, we are preparing for a farewell feast and celebrations this evening.
