Soaking in history at Milne Bay
Today we arrived at Doini Island, a tiny volcanic island on the Louisiade Archipelago in Papua New Guinea.
Many went on an 8-kilometre walk to the World War II airfield on the south side of the island, some making it to Skull Cave on top of the island which was hundreds of years old and a site for traditional New Guinea burials.
We then headed to the nearby Milne Bay (the site of Australia’s first defeat of the Japanese in 1942), which was a fabulous experience. The local community turned out with incredible carvings and bilum bags, and we took the opportunity for a chance to shop. To top off a fantastic day, we enjoyed snorkelling on the nearby coral reef alongside a stunning sunset.
