First Iceberg and Antarctic Circle Crossing

First Iceberg, Ross Sea, Y.Mishina

Our Ross Sea voyage 'In the Wake of Scott & Shackleton' has chalked up some major milestones as we head south to the heart of Antarctica.

On Saint Valentine's Day (14 February) we crossed the 60° south latitude and saw our first iceberg - a fine example with beautiful blue ice hues.

This morning at 0031 hours we crossed the Antarctic Circle, celebrating the occasion as expeditions have done for more than 150 years. All aboard Spirit of Enderby agreed to advocate for the preservation of Antarctica with each expeditioner receiving the 'mark of the penguin' along with some excellent mulled wine.

This afternoon we were privileged to experience a spectacular display by three adult Humpback Whales alongside the ship which will be long remembered. We are presently enjoying calm seas as we make our way steadily in ice-free water toward our next objective, the Great White Antarctic continent.
