Experiencing the beauty of Bougainville

After a fantastic experience sailing through Papua New Guinea, it was our last day in this remote paradise. Today’s adventure saw us arrive at Kangu Beach in Bougainville for a bus trip to the nearby town of Buin.

Buin is also home to a major piece of World War II history, as the place where Admiral Yamamoto, who conceived the surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, was shot down and killed by US P-38 fighters in 1943.

We visited the charming Buin school, where the local schoolchildren took us on a tour. Afterwards, we were joined by the local Mayor, who spoke of his optimism for Bougainville's independence and welcomed us as the first expedition cruise ship to visit Buin.

We then hopped on our Zodiacs to Laguai Village for an incredible two-hour performance of local bamboo pan flute music and dancing from the three bands from Buin.
