Preobrazheniya Bay: Impressive Ocean, Cliffs and Birds
The wind and swell rocked some to sleep on our first night onboard Spirit of Enderby on our Across the Top of the World expedition. Our first destination is Preobrazheniya Bay, known for the impressive landscape of Cape Kilikin, which holds extremely populated bird cliffs. The waves crashing against the rocks during our first zodiac cruise was a sight to behold, giving us good sense of the scale of the geological formations as well as how important these cliffs are to the migratory bird species that breed here. Horned and Tufted Puffins, Brunnichs and Common Guillemot, Parakeet Auklets, Pigeon Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Glaucous Gulls, Pelagic Cormorants and more were seen and photographed. Some even spotted a few walrus in the water! Being in the zodiacs always offers a good perspective and today we felt very small against the cliffs and ocean.
