Macquarie Magic

We cruised down the coast in the early hours, enjoying the sight of the snow covered coastline as a light dusting had fallen overnight. The huge King Penguin colony at Lusitania Bay was visible from the ship but conditions prevented a closer look. We returned north and the group was ferried ashore at Buckles Bay where they were taken on a tour of the ANARE Base and the surrounding area. Highlights were undoubtedly the many Gentoo Penguins on the nest with chicks which were obligingly close to the walkways and numerous adult male and weaner Elephant Seals which made the most of any manmade shelter. Base staff were happy to answer questions about their work in this lonely outpost and the delightfully sunny morning was enjoyed by all. We sailed at 1500hrs for Campbell Island.
