Zodiac Cruising with Albatross on Campbell Island
Our early morning explorations of Campbell Island ended with a Zodiac cruise along the eastern shores around Davis Point, Smoothwater Bay and into North East Harbour returning to board Spirit of Enderby and enjoy a welcome morning cuppa.
Rockhopper Penguins, bottomless Subantarctic blue water, stunning cliff formations, Campbell Island shags, all accompanied by several Light-mantled Sooty Albatross circling in the air currents lent an otherworldly element to our adventures.
Our second Zodiac safari saw us cruising along the cliffs to Bull Rock, covered with a dense carpet of megaherbs and a scattering of albatross nesting on the cliffs which grew into the large Campbell, Black-browed and Grey-headed Albatross colony of Bull Rock as we explored further. Thousands upon thousands were riding the wind in the air, circling to land, resting on the water or gazing outwards waiting for their mates to relieve them from their high-rise nest locations.
Truly a spectacle of epic proportions, the incredible encounter lingered well after we departed and set our course for Antipodes - the seas of the Southern Ocean gifting us a smooth sailing.
