In the Wake of Vitus Bering
While sailing to our next destination, we spend the morning learning of the expeditions of renowned Danish cartographer and explorer Vitus Bering. Our own Expedition Leader Samuel brought the tales of this extraodinary gentleman to life with his retelling of Bering, with the assistance of some 10,000 participants, completed one of the bravest expeditions in history crossing from Asia to north western America. Today it is hard to comprehend just how much persistency and courage was required to fill the orders he was given back in the 18th Century.
Later in the morning we enjoy the warm weather out on deck observing dozens of seagulls, Largha seals and a lone Orca which cruises alongside the Spirit of Enderby flashing its remarkable black and white markings. Landing on the shores of Bukhta Gavrilla in the afternoon, our more energetic voyagers climbed more than 500 metres up to a rocky vantage point where they are greeted by stunning panoramas as the rest of the group explore the beach and valley collecting berries from the vibrant autumn tundra.
