Sunshine and Ice Floes
The Silent 70s were living up to their name as Akademik Shokalskiy shuddered through ice floes resting on the glassy water as we sailed further south under blue skies with a light easterly breeze.
Our expeditioners joined us in the bridge and out on deck as we weaved through the ice watching airborne Adelie Penguins leap out of the water onto floes and lone Leopard and Crabeater Seals raise their heads to watch our passage from private frozen islands.
Several pods of Antarctic Minke Whales could also be seen, their small dorsal fins knifing through the deep blue water, out on their own Antarctic adventure. We expect to reach Cape Adare around 2230 hours with the hopes of a midnight Zodiac cruise if the ice and weather allows.
