Revelling in the rising tides of Montgomery Reef
We enjoyed a relaxing morning on board as we waited for the tide to ebb, and the magnificent 400 kilometres square Montgomery Reef to rise out of the water. As the reef graced us with its presence, we boarded the Zodiacs and navigated the channel playing in the rapids as the water ran off the reef. We spotted wading birds and birds of prey quick to get food from the invertebrates being exposed by the dropping tide. We observed turtles up the channel and, at some points, were surrounded by them not knowing which way to look. A Humpback Whale also explored the channel, and we watched it safely exit into safer deeper waters.
The afternoon was spent at Widgingarra Butt Butt (Freshwater Cove) with the traditional owners living on country throughout the dry season. We received a traditional welcome, including ochre being dabbed on our cheeks. Then we learnt about how special the area is before walking to their rock art site, enjoying the views and taking in the flora along the way. We rested under the Woollybutt Tree, before heading into the cave for an explanation of the meanings behind the rock art we could see. Our guides Reilani, Warren, YC and Gideon explained their stories and how significant the artwork is. We meandered back down to the beach for a smoking ceremony to cleanse us and prepare us for our onward voyage. There was an exploration of the beach and the living quarters for those who wanted to, chatting with the team and gaining an insight into life on country.
