Novokuril'skaya Bay and Chirpoy Island
Walking, beachcombing and bird watching were on offer this morning at Novokuril'skaya Bay, Urup Island. While enjoying the unique environment, we came across two Russian researchers from Moscow who were in the bay studying the war history of the region. They were very keen to have a chat and share their knowledge - a rare treat to learn so much about the specific area we were visiting.
Over lunch we sailed to Chirpoy Island and experienced a fantastic zodiac cruise along the coastline. The recent volcanic activity is so evident here, yet the diversity of wildlife and birdspecies that have made the island their home is incredible. Puffins, fulamars and shags were among the many bird species sighted during our cruise - we were very happy campers heading back to the ship for the evening.
