Immersed in the birding paradise of Chuuk State
Today, we arrived at Chuuk State, one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia. The birders set off for the Japanese WWII Lighthouse at the eastern tip of Weno Island. Along the way, we enjoyed excellent views of the endemic Chuuk Flycatcher, Caroline Islands Ground Dove and Caroline Reed Warbler. Even the beautiful red Micronesian Myzomela were uncharacteristically showy. Those who climbed to the top of the historic lighthouse were rewarded with close flybys of courting White-tailed Tropicbirds and had great looks at a pair of endangered Chuuk Monarchs in the undergrowth. Everyone was thrilled to see all the bird species we could hope for.
The Grand Pacific Odyssey adventurers enjoyed the afternoon snorkelling, surrounded by a picturesque coconut grove at Blue Lagoon Resort. It was a beautiful day in this idyllic paradise for all!
