Greeted by King Penguins on Macquarie Island

Our In the Wake of Scott & Shackleton voyage continued as we journeyed to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and Australian territory Macquarie Island. Arriving at dawn, we were greeted by an incredible scene as hundreds of King Penguins put on a show, swimming around Heritage Adventurer

Our day at Macquarie Island began with a ship cruise from Lusitania Bay to Hurd Point. As the wind dropped in the mid-afternoon, it was on to the Zodiacs to land at Sandy Bay. We were met by a captivating scene as King, Royal and Gentoo Penguins and piles of Elephant Seals covered the beach. The penguins were inquisitive, while the Elephant Seals were totally uninterested in anything more than sleeping and occasionally roaring.

A fantastic day on Macquarie Island, preparing us for the wealth of wildlife we will encounter in The Ross Sea.
