Exploring Ancient Akiyoshido Cave and Hagiyaki Pottery at Yamaguchi

Last night's informative lecture from Glenda was just the preparation we needed for our visit to Akiyoshido Cave as Heritage Adventurer sailed into Yamaguchi this morning. We stared in awe at Akiyoshido Cave's famous stalagmites and stalactites wondering what stories these ancient formations held hidden in one of the largest limestone caves in Japan.

Lunch was a hit as we were treated to a ramen bar out on the deck. Soon it was time to explore the town of Hagi, famous for its oranges, beginning with a wander through the Samurai quarter with the air heavy with the delightful scent of citrus.

The afternoon passed quickly as we admired the craftsmanship in Yoshiga Taibi Museum and Pottery Studio for an up-close look the town's celebrated Hagiyaki pottery. This pottery technique was imported from Korea and flourished during the Edo period (1603 - 1867). Hagiyaki products are highly sought after for their use in Chado, or traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, and an excellent souvenir for the tea enthusiasts among us.

After another day of exploring the delights of Japan it was time to return to our trusty expedition ship where we enjoyed a recap of today's events followed by another incredible dinner and set sail for South Korea.
