Explorations of Chalky Inlet

Zodiac cruise Fiordland, I.Wilson

After a peaceful night at anchor in Lake Cove, Fiordland, the last bit of rain eased as the sun came through the morning clouds. First off were the walkers heading to explore Lake Cadman and Cora Lynn Falls. After finding the start of the trail there was a steep climb to get up, and over, the hill before a drop down to stunning views of the top of the falls and lake. Meanwhile, the remaining group cruised Lake Cove exploring as far up the river as possible where Lumaluma Creek flows down. The water was completely still and reflections of the surrounding hills and bush lay on the surface, providing the most picturesque cruise yet.

Sailing back towards the mouth of Chalky Inlet, the Captain anchored Heritage Explorer off Great Island and exploration this afternoon included beachcombing along Fisherman's Bay and viewing the wreck of the Stella, which lies partly submerged on Little Island. We then moved further south into Preservation Inlet, slowly cruising past historic Spit Islands before finding anchorage in Fishing Bay between Coal and Steep-to Islands. A beautiful sunset topped off another great day on our Southern Fiords Discovery expedition cruise.
