Doubtful Sound, Waterfalls and Secretary Island

Fiordland waterfall, S.Bradley

It was an atmospheric Fiordland morning as Heritage Explorer bid farewell to Breaksea Sound and pointed her bow northwards. En route to Doubtful Sound we passed Breaksea Island and listened to the Fiordland-crested Penguins calling from their nests beneath the trees.

The sail northwards was accompanied by the seabirds with Buller's Albatross and Cape Petrel being the most prolific but White-capped and Royal Albatross, and Giant Petrel putting in regular appearances as well.

Upon arrival to Doubtful Sound it was evident that there had been significant rain recently as the waterfalls tumbled to the sea here, there and everywhere putting on an incredible display. Captain Jim artfully maneuvered Heritage Explorer in close beneath several for even better views. Between the rain showers in the afternoon most headed out to explore the shores of Secretary Island before we enjoyed our final dinner aboard.
