Dolphin Escorts to Ise-Shima
Early risers were treated to the sight of a pod of dolphins this morning as Heritage Adventurer steamed towards the natural beauty of Ise-Shima. After breakfast we boarded our Zodiacs and skipped over the calm water to the wharf and fishermen at Ōyahama Beach under a warm and hazy sun.
On shore into three groups and headed off on our separate adventures. While group one enjoyed stunning panorama’s from Ise-Shima Skyline and Mount Asama and a delicious lunch of sushi and tempura before exploring Futamiura, home to the iconic Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks), group two took to the hills.
Following a scenic drive through the wooded hills on narrow roads to the outer shrine (Ise Jingu Geku) of the Ise-Shima Shrine where we learned these shrines date back 2000 years! From there, it was a short drive to the inner shrine (Ise Jingu Naiku) where we joined locals crossing the river and traverse the splendid park-like gardens to the shrine before stopping for lunch at ‘Japan’s Most Famous Restaurant’ where the ‘casual sushi bowl’ was delicious enough to be famous for sure. Our explorations continued in Osatsu, a coastal village historically known for its Ama divers - women who free dive to collect shellfish and seaweed.
Guests opting for group three’s adventures made their way to Ise-Shima National Park where we hiked to the Observatory Deck and enjoyed fantastic views over Ago Bay. After a stop for an authentic hot pot lunch, we had a chance to discover the art of pearl harvesting with everyone opening our own oyster – and keeping the pearl inside! Next up it was Ise Jingu Naiku shrine, followed by Okage Yokocho, a charming shopping district that preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period.
With everyone back on board Heritage Adventurer, it was time to get ready for the Captain’s Welcome Cocktails and Dinner as we sailed towards Oshima Island.
