A Day of Adventures on Enderby Island

Sandy Bay, Enderby Island, A.Russ

After a quiet night at anchor Spirit of Enderby came alive this morning with preparations for our day ashore on Enderby Island where the sun was breaking through the clouds and the wildlife was calling.

Before long everyone had enjoyed breakfast and collected their packed lunch, then it was time for the Zodiacs to shuttle us ashore where Yellow-eyed Penguins and Hooker's Sea lions awaited on the beach. The group was nearly evenly split between those making the full walk around the island and those visiting the northern cliffs and exploring Sandy Bay.

The Sea lions on the beach were full of action with young pups starting to explore their environment while the beachmaster bulls still looked to defend and maintain their harems. Along the northern coast the Anisotome was still in full flower and we were lucky to find some excellent examples of the local gentian in bloom. All in all a great day was had with everyone thoroughly convinced Enderby Island is the jewel in the glittering crown of New Zealand's Subantarctic Islands.
