Beringia Challenge

This morning we explored the former Inuit settlement of Naukan at Cape Dezhnev, the northeastern most point of the continent. Most of the circular rock foundations are still largely in tact, each with a doorway facing breathtaking 180-degree ocean views. We found some rusty pots and kettles camouflaged in the tall grass as we meandered through the hut remains. Eventually we all reached the historic lighthouse commemorating Semyon Dezhnev, the first European to sail through the strait in 1648.

Our afternoon visit to Lavrentiya village coincided nicely with the colorful annual Beringia Regatta and Chukotka Cultural Festival. Traditional song and dance performances graced the stage, whaleboat racers charged down the course and artisans displayed carved bones, fur hats and beaded clothing. Part of the beach was flagged off for wrestling, strength competitions and a tug-of-war. Seven female passengers and staff from the Spirit of Enderby were persuaded to form a tug-of-war team to challenge the locals and somehow managed to win! Each victorious team member was awarded a blue and white hat for their victory.
