A day in the garden city of Christchurch
Our The Best of New Zealand voyage saw us arrive in Lyttelton, a small port town with a great shipping history.
The first group to depart headed to Quail Island for a tour by one of the local guides. We learned of the rich history of the island, which was a former colony for lepers and immigrants, and where Scott and Shackleton trained dogs and Manchurian ponies for their Antarctic expeditions. After the walk, we returned to Heritage Adventurer for lunch and then to Christchurch for an afternoon of leisure.
The second group visited the stunning Ōhinetahi Gardens for a guided tour. Afterwards, they made their way to the Rossendale Winery for winetasting and lunch before also heading to Christchurch to explore.
Christchurch is a dynamic and vibrant city, and it was fantastic to see the developments following the devastating 2011 earthquake.
