Weather Watch off McMurdo

Yesterday was one of those days Antarctic Buffs only dream about. Today is one of those days that Antarctic Buffs worry about.

The wind was blowing strongly when we arrived at Cape Royds (Shackleton's Nimrod hut) yesterday, but by the time lunch was over it has eased and then eventually became calm (something that rarely happens in this part of the world). Everybody landed and walked to the hut and enjoyed an amazing afternoon. Back on board we enjoyed dinner as we cruised to Cape Evans and Scott's Terra Nova Hut. Again the weather held and we had a great evening ashore.

This morning we are sitting off Hut Point (Scott's Discovery Hut) and McMurdo and Scott Bases and the weather has deteriorated. We have driving snow and poor visibility, and worse, we are unable to land as the landing sites are packed full of ice. However it is a very dynamic place and will change, it is just a case of when. Until that happens we are relaxing on board whilst maintaining a constant weather watch, something all Antarcticians get very good at.
