Snorkelling, village life and warm welcomes in Nendo
Located far to the east of the Solomon Islands, the majestically remote islands of the Temotu province are specs in the ocean compared to the larger higher islands. But what they lack in size, they more than make up for in diversity and beauty. Our first stop was Nendo, the largest island, where we enjoyed a beautiful morning snorkelling followed by an early lunch and a rather heavy shower as we travelled into the interior of the island to see our friends at Noipe Village. After a rapturous welcome we were treated to traditional dancing by the village elders whose traditional costumes included large, ceremonial mother of pearl carvings hanging from the pierced septum of their noses. This was followed by fascinating demonstrations of traditional red feather money manufacture and cooking. After time to explore the village, we enjoyed a heartfelt farewell from each and every member of the community.
