Napping Polar Bear and Lazing Walrus

Polar Bear on Ice Wrangel Island

As Kapitan Khlebnikov sailed east this morning, we gathered in the lecture hall for an informative talk about sea ice presented by our French guide, Samuel. After, we bundled up and loaded into the Zodiacs for a cruise through the sea ice we had just learned about where we spotted a napping Polar Bear and several lazing Walrus. Mid-lunch, two Polar Bears were identified off starboard side. No binoculars needed, we could see clearly through the dining room windows.

In the late afternoon, we landed at Dragi Bay. To our left, dramatic cliffs partly shrouded in clouds gave way to rolling tundra and sweeping coastline leading to an elevated, rocky cape. Over a kilometre away, we spotted a lone Polar Bear meandering down the hillside to the beach. The Polar Bear continued its way towards us, occasionally stopping to sniff and scan the landscape before finding a spot to recline and rest. Our own meandering saw some of the voyagers walk out to the cape for a bird's eye view.
