Feeding and Flukes at Kolyuchin Island
Enroute to Wrangel we had a very enjoyable landing at Kolyuchin Island. The hike up on top of a headland gave views down into very active bird cliffs and we were able to sit at eye level with Horned Puffins, Brunnichs Guillemot, Glaucous Gulls and Kittiwakes. As the Spirit of Enderby departed we found over 30 humpback whales feeding in a very small area making shallow dives. To top this spectacle off, we had an estimated thousand shearwaters utilising the opportunity to feed in the water that the whales were stirring up. The sight of flukes in all directions and birds flocking from one site to another was fantastic. We spent an hour and a half watching from the bridge and outer decks.
