Expecting the Unexpected at Santa Ana

16 April - Santa Ana arrival

Before landing we were informed to 'expect the unexpected' - this was a new landing for Heritage Expeditions.  Excitement mounted as we knew the village we looking forward to our visit and some had paddled their dug-out canoes a distance to meet us.  Our arrival by zodiac was met by four young men in traditional warrior outfits on the village beach brandishing traditional adze-like weapons.  Much like Maori culture, this show of strength and power was to check of our intentions - peaceful or otherwise.  Once ashore safely we were then greeted by a senior member of the village and guided to a shaded area where we were entertained by women in brightly-coloured costumes adorned with flowers, intricate shell jewellery and woven palm-fronds.  Women elders provided the melodic singing while the younger women danced.  Our Doctor aboard responded in Maori and our group sung a waiata to the village in response to thank them for having us. As well as being warmly welcomed by t he people, the birding group sighted several unexpected species on a two hour wander slightly inland. Others chose to stay in the village and wander in their own time to interact with the locals, purchase village crafts, and then spend time snorkelling on the reefs in the sheltered bay - bright lemon coral, blue starfish and vividly-coloured fish were highlights.  Our chefs from the ship sourced some crayfish (lobster) from the local fishermen, which were brought back onboard the ship and most opted for this delicacy for dinner to end the day.  High spirits aboard the ship - a special experience for all aboard.
