Campbell Island Delights Expeditioners

Today marks the end of two incredible days at Campbell Island, one of the highlights of the Forgotten Islands of the South Pacific expedition. Expeditioners split into groups depending on their interests, with one hardy group spending the day making their way up to North West Bay. Their day was spent traversing through lush fields of brightly coloured megaherbs while majestic Southern Royal Albatross soared overhead. The group were buzzing when they returned to the ship as they regaled the other expeditioners with their tales of close encounters with the albatross and observing groups of juvenile male albatross hanging out chatting amongst themselves.

The second group had a chance to zodiac cruise up the harbour, spending time watching the inquisitive Hooker sealions, flightless teal and learning some of the incredible history of the islands and how they are now recovering from farming and pests.

Over the two days most enjoyed walks up to Col Lyall and the Southern Royal Albatross colony, just sitting and admiring these wondrous birds. A time to sit back and watch these birds put on their magnificent displays and also to soak up the atmosphere of the amazing vistas at the top. The weather has been changeable but all still returned to the ship with smiles on their faces.

Unfortunately now after a satisfying lunch, it is time to lift anchor, batten down the hatches and start our journey north and home. Time to reflect on what we have seen and to experience more of what the Southern Ocean has to offer.
