2 Feb Voyage: Shokalskiy Cape Adare

We anchored at Cape Adare in the early hours of the morning and went ashore at 0800 on a beautiful calm, sunny day which belies its reputation as one of the most inhospitable locations on earth. This site was made famous by Norwegian Commander Carsten Borchgrevink from the British Antarctic (Southern Cross) Expedition in 1898-1900.  The hut was the first human structure built on the Antarctic Continent and is being conserved by the Ross Sea Heritage Restoration project to preserve the legacy of Antarctic adventurers. The Adelie Penguin colony nearby is the largest in Antarctica. We departed for Possession Island at 1600 and came to anchor there just before dinner. Unfortunately the sea ice was moving too quickly to allow a landing at the spot where Sir James Clark Ross landed 175 years ago but two of his descendants who are travelling with us accompanied staff on a Zodiac cruise close to shore. James Hood Ross, his great, great grandson and great, great, great granddaughter Philippa Ross were photographed on the ice holding a flag emblazoned with the family crest in honour of their ancestor.
