A Soloman Islands adventure!

Our Grand and Western Pacific Odyssey adventure saw us arrive at the island of Santa Ana in the Soloman Islands! We had two options to choose from, a day of birding, or snorkelling in the morning and visiting the local village.

The birders set off first ready to start their grand adventure. Welcomed by the friendly locals, we explored this island paradise with fantastic sightings of the tiny Sooty Myzomela, the larger impressive Island Imperial Pigeon, and the stunning Solomons Rufous Fantail.

As we explored the village, some of the harder-to-find species revealed themselves. We observed the all-black Chestnut-bellied Monarch, a speciality of Santa Ana, White-collard Monarch, Oriole Whistler, two stunning Fruit Doves, Silver-capped Fruit-Dove and White-headed Fruit Dove.

As we walked back to the beach and the awaiting Zodiacs, we saw the strange-looking Melanesian Megapode and the Sanford’s or Solomon Sea-Eagle.

Those not birding started their day snorkelling in coral gardens in a beautiful bay teeming with fish. It was a relaxing morning and a great start in the Solomon Islands.

After lunch back on board Heritage Adventurer, it was time to head to the village. Our Expedition Leader made clear that we all had to go in at the same time. And that is what we did! What happened? We were charged by warriors in traditional clothing and holding traditional weapons. Now we know how the explorers felt when they tried to set foot on land. After this impressive start, we made our way into the village and enjoyed performances that represented lessons about history and animals.

After the performances, we had time to interact and peruse the beautiful displays of crafts, art and tools on display. We ended with one last swim in the bay, before returning to our beloved Heritage Adventurer, to set sail to our next stop.
