Arriving at the island paradise of New Caledonia

As dawn creeped its way out of the mist, Heritage Adventurer navigated the coral reefs that protect the shores of Noumea. Arriving in the morning, we had the choice to explore the markets and peruse the abundant seafood and fresh fruits on display, then up the hill to Ouen Toro, to enjoy stunning views of numerous islands dotting the tropical water. We finished our morning at the Nouméa Cathedral, walking among the well-worn pews and admiring the luminous stained-glass windows.

After lunch back on board Heritage Adventurer, we headed to Baie des Citrons for our first snorkelling excursion of the voyage. The warm waters were perfect for snorkelling, and after the refreshing experience, we chose to relax in the sun or wander the beach admiring the sun-bleached corals and delicate shells. We then drove to the historic site of Nou Island where we drifted through the remnants of New Caledonia’s penal colony.

In the afternoon, the birders headed to the mountaintop of Mount Koghi via bus, and we climbed the steep narrow roads of the mountain. We were greeted by light rain which actually made birding much easier. The choice of staying on the road or adventuring into the forest was difficult, as birds were plentiful but challenging in both locations.

We all saw the New Caledonian Thicketbird/Grassbird, which was difficult, but obliged us with very good views for a brief time only, before it descended into the protection of the undergrowth. There were lots of excited people, with everyone seeing something different and a birding list still with gaps, which only created more determination for the following day's outing.

After a full day of activity for everyone, we returned to the comforts of Heritage Adventurer for a delicious dinner and a well-earned sleep.
