Exploring Borchgrevink’s Huts, a Blue Whale and Two Humpbacks

Borchgrevinks Huts, Cape Adare, Heritage Expeditions

After waking to perfect weather off Cape Adare, a small number of us boarded Zodiacs and enjoyed a landing on Ridley Beach where we inspected Borchgrevink's two huts. Ashore, many moulting Adelie Penguins congregated, waiting for their waterproof feathers to grow in so they could return the water.

Later, we enjoyed another Zodiac cruise where Elephant, Crabeater, Weddell and Leopard Seals were all observed along with a lone Antarctic Fur Seal - in all, five species of seals and a lone King Penguin. Taking advantage of the excellent weather, several guests enjoyed the chilly embrace of a polar plunge.

After lunch, Spirit of Enderby sailed north, leaving Cape Adare and the glorious Admiralty Mountains in our wake, an on to an amazing encounter with a Blue Whale and two Humpbacks.
