Wrangel Arrival

We arrived off Wrangel Island late yesterday afternoon. The ice maps showed a belt of heavier ice along the south coast and our radio discussion with the Wrangel Rangers told us that the north coast was clearing and the harbour there was clear of ice so it was just a question of whether we could push through. The ice became much heavier as we approached the island. We spotted Walrus on the ice and several Polar Bears. One female was very relaxed and allowed us some great views. About 3 miles short of Doubtful Harbour we decided that the ice was too heavy and spent the evening extracting ourselves. Overnight we steamed around to the Cape Thomas area which is ice free. The Rangers are now making their way overland to meet us and we expect a rendezvouz with them this afternoon.
