Verkhoturova Island

Blue skies and mirror-like seas greeted us this morning at Verkhoturova Island. A two hour zodiac cruise was just spectacular – Tufted and Horned Puffins, Crested, Least and Parakeet Auklets and Brunnich’s Guillemots made up the significant bird species seen. The most impressive bird sighting was a Little Auk, viewed from two of our zodiacs and only ever seen once in this region around 5 years ago. Steller Sea Lions and Largha Seals in good numbers completed a pretty impressive wildlife list for the morning. We made a short landing and climbed up a short trail to a cliff top and got magnificent views of Tufted Puffins on the cliff face just a few metres away from us.

A landing at Bear Gully wasn’t possible due to a high swell, however we managed to get some good views of Brown Bears – including mothers and their cubs. A special way to finish off a busy and wildlife filled day.
