Spectacular Zodiac Cruising Snares Islands

The Spirit of Enderby arrived in the early morning at our first stop of the expedition, the rugged and spectacular Snares Islands. Travelling on an expedition cruise means that flexibility is key, in order to make the most of the conditions at the time.

Expedition leader Alex looked at the conditions for cruising and decided that it would be best if we moved our zodiac cruise to before breakfast. This decision really paid off as it meant that we were able to cruise the Snares in calm conditions before the wind picked up later in the day. We all felt very lucky to be able to cruise the rocky coastline, teeming with wildlife.

Expeditioners were delighted with great views of the Snares Crested Penguins as they hopped in and out of the water, and up the steep 'Rockslide'. New Zealand Fur Seals kept a watchful eye over our Zodiacs as we kept a look out for birdlife including tiny Tomtits, Sooty Shearwaters and Bullers Albatross.

When the sun came out briefly, photographers were rewarded with a kaleidopscope of colours from the golden glow of the kelp swaying in the water, contrasting with the steely grey of the rocks, to the lush and vibrant greens.

After a thrilling morning, we returned back on board for breakfast and spent the remainder of the day at sea as we headed towards the Auckland Islands.
