Sensory Overload on 'Macca'

Chinstrap Penguin with King and Royal Penguins

We experienced some heavy seas on the run to Macquarie Island where we came to anchor at 0200hrs off the ANARE base at Buckles Bay. There we picked up the Station Leader Mark and two rangers who accompanied us along the coast to Sandy Bay. Zodiacs shuttled everyone ashore where they had a wonderful day amongst the thousands of King and Royal Penguins and Elephant Seals. It was hard to decide where to look, there was so much going on. A lone Chinstrap Penguin looked in vain for another of his own kind, and a small pod of Orca cruised offshore. “Just another day on Macca" commented one of the team.
