Royals and Kings on Macquarie Island
We had an early start with a landing at Sandy Bay on Macquarie Island on a rare sunny, blue-sky day. Sandy Bay was filled with curious penguins and elephant seals eager to greet us. The Royal Penguin colony was practically deafening with noise and plenty of new fuzzy chicks waddling around. And if you looked closely at the King penguin colony you could see them sitting on and protecting their eggs. It was a day to simply sit back and observe the animals as they observed you. After dropping off the park rangers, we had a rare opportunity to travel down the western coast of the island due to the unusual southeast winds. A perfect send off for our continued journey southward!
