Polar Bear Encounter

It is Sunday night and we are drifting off shore from Dragi Harbour where 100 years ago the survivors of the wreck of the vessel Karluk sought shelter. If you are not familiar with the story of the Karluk I suggest you read Jennifer Niven’s book ‘The Ice Master’ which outlines this amazing story. We can tell our own amazing story about our voyage from Herald Island to Wrangel Island yesterday when we encountered substantial sea ice. As we navigated through it we encountered several Polar Bears and one in particular made it a really memorable day. After watching us for a time from a safe distance, this animal gained the confidence to approach the ship and in the low evening Arctic light we enjoyed an incredible encounter. This was a once in a lifetime experience for most on board, where the boundaries between man and animal became blurred. Words can not adequately describe the feeling but the photos and memories will I hope last forever. These magnificent animals are in serious danger and need our support.

Close Encounter

Today we undertook a vigorous hike across the high tundra that is unique to Wrangel Island, with the fit walkers completing close to 30km. It was wonderful to be able to immerse ourselves for a time in this pristine environment. The highlights recorded by both groups included the unique plant life, wild landscape, Snowy Owls, Muskoxen and a Polar Bear. Everyone returned to the ship inspired by this truly sensational location.
