Macca Balloon Up

A big swell and less than 100m visibility caused some concerns as we began our landing at the ANARE Station at Buckles Bay but with the aid of compass and GPS the Zodiac drivers did a magnificent job. The fog lifted to reveal a sparkling blue sky once we had all landed for an interesting and informative morning on station and around the isthmus. The birders were delighted to tick the Redpoll and everyone saw Rockhoppers and Gentoos. Some even scored a lost Chinstrap Penguin a long way from home!

Photos on the walls of the mess where we devoured hot scones with jam and cream told the story of 50 years history here. Our intrepid kayakers managed to launch from a rolling ship and had a wow of a time, including the first ever landing of a kayak on Macca.

When the daily weather balloon went up it was the signal for everyone to make their way to the beach for transfer back to the ship. We were grateful that the weather had allowed us spend such a wonderful day here. This place is like Jurassic Park on steroids!
