Kolyuchin Seascape

Until the 1990's, Kolyuchin Island was used as a polar research station, but nowadays it is only visited by wildlife, occasional walrus hunters and on rare occasions, modern day explorers like us aboard the Spirit of Enderby.

Kolyuchin Cliffs

Once the expedition team had thoroughly checked the western end of the island for Polar Bears, the group was cleared for landing. On shore we followed an old supply cart track up the hillside leading to several abandoned and delapitated buildings (one with polar bear fur on the floor!). On the northern coastline we came to steep rocky cliffs teeming with nesting Guillimots, Puffins and Kittiwakes. The views from here of both seabirds and seascape were magnificent and amazing photos were taken by all.
