Exploring Rabaul and Duke of York Islands
As morning dawned we were welcomed to Rabaul by her volcanoes, dominating the skyline to the west of us and illuminated by the rising sun.
The Spirit of Enderby glided to her anchorage at Kokopo and shortly therafter the birders were on their way to the mountains in search of the New Britain endemics. The rest of us followed them ashore a little later for a morning where history and geology was to the forefront, with visits to the Kokopo Museum, Japanese Tunnels, Rabaul Volcano Observatory , Yamamoto's Bunker and the Papua New Guinea Club all featuring on our morning exploration.
The sun shone brightly and with just a gentle breeze it was if anything a little on the warm side by later in the morning. With everybody back aboard we repositioned the ship out to the Duke of York Islands where we spent a glorious couple of hours snokelling and swimming from a golden sand beach as the heat of the day left and the golden light arrived.
