Commander Islands - Siberia's Forgotten Coast

We have had a busy start to our Siberia’s Forgotten Coast expedition. A zodiac cruise of Zhupanova River was enjoyed in fantastically calm and clear weather. The Commander Islands were a bit of a contrast with high winds and fog however we still managed a landing at the village of Nikolskoye where we got to explore the remote and isolated community. After a ship reposition, we visited Bering’s grave after dinner – a poignant memorial to the man who discovered the Commander Islands by virtue of shipwreck in 1741.

The wind was still with us on our second day at the Commanders – however the ship staff worked hard to still achieve a zodiac cruise and landing on Medny Island. Our return to the ship was a fast one, with high winds picking up – some of us enjoyed the thrill of the ride, while others were very please to reach the gangway!
