Chukchi Hospitality
Over the past two days we've had the unique opportunity to explore the Kolyuchin Inlet, a massive tidal estuary on the northern coast of Chukotka. The wildlife sightings were fantastic and included a large number of Emperor Geese and King Eiders, enormous flocks of Red Phalaropes (an estimated 10,000), Long-tailed Ducks, Sandhill Cranes, Dunlins, Gray Plovers, some Trumpeter Swans and White-billed Divers, a few Brown Bears, Arctic Fox, seals and even an elegant Tundra Swan which glided across a misty lagoon.
One couple in our group came across a Chukchi hut on the tundra and were invited in to meet the grandchildren and enjoy a cup of traditional Chukchi tea.
