Chatham Islands

We experienced our first real rainfall for this voyage as the ship lay at anchor off Waitangi. Despite this, the group thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Tuku reserve where regenerating bush is home to numerous Chatham Island Pigeons, Chatham Grey Warblers, Tuis, Fantails and Weka. A few people were also able to visit the predator free area of Sweetwater, where the Taiko breeds and local conservationists are also working to establish a new population of Chatham Island Petrel. Wind conditions made for an exhilarating Zodiac ride as passengers returned to the ship and due to deteriorating weather we will depart the Chathams for Dunedin tonight.
