Brilliant Birding on Campbell Island

Southern Royal Albatross on Campbell Island

Light winds and sunny patches were the order of the day on Day 10 of our Birding Down Under voyage on Campbell Island. After dropping anchor in Perseverance Bay, and those walking to Northwest Bay off at shore, the rest of us piled into the Zodiacs for a morning cruising the inner part of Perseverance Harbour. The Campbell Island Shag and Teal were out in good numbers with everyone getting amazing views (and photos) of each. We then made a quick stop at Garden Cove before coming across a group of Shags fishing out in the harbour. Some voyagers then enjoyed an hour at the start of the Col Lyall Track looking for the Campbell Island Snipe - by the day's end we had seen more than 8 of these elusive creatures with everyone getting a great view and story to tell. Then it was time for a quick lunch onboard Spirit of Enderby before heading out in the sunshine and up the Col Lyall Boardwalk to see the majestic Southern Royal Albatross, topping off an awesome day on Campbell Island. Of course, we didn't forget to pick up our beaming Northwest Bay walkers who all experienced a walk to remember.
