Breaking Free
We are clear of the ice and running for Campbell Island across an amazingly smooth Southern Ocean. The ice at the entrance to the Ross Sea is doing strange things this season. Where we would normally expect open water at this time of the year we had heavy ice. It took us two days to push through it and we finally broke out about 11pm last night. Today we will be wrapping up our lecture series on Antarctica and from tomorrow we will be focusing on the Southern Ocean and Subantarctic Islands in preparation for our visit to Campbell Island. The team on the bridge watching for wildlife this morning was rewarded with the sight of 7 humpback whales breaching and playing not too far away from the ship. The outside air temperature has increased slightly and this morning was a balmy 2 degrees with a light wind from the west.
